Santorini is relatively close to Crete. If you’re holidaying in Crete during the summer, consider making a trip across — either independently (by ferry or flight) or as part of an organised excursion. Each option has its advantages.
- Ferries. Ferries connect Santorini with two Cretan ports: Heraklion and Rethymno. A catamaran crossing takes about two hours. Ferry timetables are arranged so that a day trip is possible, returning to your hotel the same evening. Tickets start from about €185 return. You can book through ferry-booking sites such as FerriesInGreece.
- Direct flights. Direct flights from Crete to Santorini exist but are irregular — during the season flights may be scarce or require a connection in Athens. Flights are generally more expensive than the ferry.
- Organised group excursions (1–2 days). Regular one- and two-day excursions from Crete to Santorini are the most reliable way to visit the island. Both options include free time. A typical one-day trip (from €160) covers hotel transfer to the catamaran, the catamaran ticket and an island tour. The two-day option (from €200) includes a night in a 3* hotel with breakfast.
Personally, I prefer the two-day option — day-trippers almost always miss the main highlight: the sunset view from Oia, which is the classic postcard panorama of Santorini.
